  • Sony has announced an underwhelming lineup of PS Plus free games for July.
  • Subscribers can pick up NBA 2K20, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Erica for the PlayStation 4.
  • A special 10th anniversary PS4 theme is also on the way later this week.

Sony has announced July’s upcoming PlayStation Plus freebies. Next month, subscribers can get their hands on, not one or two, but three free PlayStation 4 (PS4) games – NBA 2K20, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Erica.

Why three games instead of the usual two? It’s ten years since PlayStation Plus launched back in June 2010. Sony is throwing in a third game to mark the occasion.

Here’s what the platform holder has to say in a PlayStation Blog post detailing this month’s haul of PS Plus games.

Wow, it’s been 10 years since PlayStation Plus was first introduced to the world on June 29, 2010, and we truly want to thank all of you for supporting PS Plus over the past decade.

It continues:

It’s been a memorable journey over the years, bringing gamers together and providing access to compelling content and exclusive discounts for our members. We wouldn’t be here without all of you, so as a thank you, we wanted to make this upcoming monthly games announcement extra special by adding a bonus game to our incredible lineup.

PS Plus 10th Anniversary Lineup Utterly Misses the Mark

Yet, looking at the lineup, there’s little to get genuinely excited about and even less to celebrate. The three games are mediocre at best.

A gambling simulator masquerading as a basketball game, NBA 2K20 is nothing to shout from the rooftops about. Especially ten months after its release.

Rise of the Tomb Raider ups the proposition a little, but it’s not exactly a PS4 exclusive to hammer home the festivities like, say, Marvel’s Spider-Man.

Finally, Erica is a full-motion, live-action interactive thriller that can’t decide if it wants to be a movie or a video game.

PlayStation is also offering a limited time PS4 theme. You can pick it up on the PS Store later this week.

There’s a sense that PlayStation could have spiced up July’s offering to reward the 41.5 million loyal subscribers laying down cash month after month.

Even March and April’s standard lineups were better thanks to the likes of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Shadow of the Colossus.

NBA 2K20, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Erica are free for PS Plus members from July 7 until August 3.
